Sheryl DeVore in a feature on Letters from Dad in Pioneer Press/Chicago Tribune writes: “In 1984, Kristin Vehill received a 10-page letter from her dad just before she began her first real job as a copywriter in downtown Chicago.
Her father began with an old joke. A mentor tells his fledgling she’ll do great if she stands up straight, keeps her eye on the ball, her shoulder to the wheel, her feet on the ground and her head down.
The fledgling responds: “But how can I accomplish anything from that position?”
“I reread the letter every so often,” Vehill recently told Ann Filmer, artistic director of 16th Street Theater in Berwyn. “It’s timeless.”
