Joan Suchomel is an architect who lives in Oak Park and works in downtown Chicago. From a large family raised in a small college town in Iowa, she earned her BA in Architecture at Iowa State University, and her Master of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She relocated to the Chicago area in 1997, working for several national firms (RTKL; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) before taking a position as Principal at Eckenhoff Saunders Architects in January of 2016.
Joan’s professional specialty is healthcare architecture, from small community hospitals to large academic medical centers. She focuses on medical planning, including strategic planning for healthcare facility solutions. She is 2017 Past President of the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health. As the Academy’s President in 2016, she led the board in developing a strategic plan for the Academy for 2017-2021, with the intent of focusing resources on best serving the membership.
Joan has served on a number of volunteer boards in the past; she was twice president of the board of Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Oak Park, where she led the strategic planning task force in 2001. She has also been a member of the board of Chicago a cappella, and the Bay View Community Center (Milwaukee). She has served on the Iowa State University Architecture Advisory Committee.
Joan’s personal interests (besides theater and music) include international travel, gardening, and planning events with friends and family.
Joan is thrilled to join the 16th Street Theater board, and looks forward to supporting our mission to “encourage debate, discussion and compassion amongst our community through the medium of intimate and diverse theater.”
